Quality breeding for show & dressage

Breeding Royal Show & National Champions for the show & dressage circuit

Elise and Mathew Hams are breeders of Sanlirra Stud Show & Dressage Ponies & Galloways. The stud was founded 1975 by Anne and Wayne (Elise’s parents) in South Australia when they started breeding registered show ponies, the type based on the English Riding Ponies. Anne’s father before her was breeding ponies and at a young age Anne became involved in the stud breeding, thus the family tradition has now come three generations. Today Anne is still the backbone of the Sanlirra breeding enterprise.

Sanlirra ponies are known for their temperament, trainability, conformation and quality of their exceptional movement. The breed has won at shows in all states of Australia, producing countless champions and winning National Titles.

showing, dressage & quality all-rounders

A Sanlirra pony or galloway is suited to the disciplines of showing and dressage as well as being excellent all-rounders for both children and adults. Most commonly a Sanlirra client is looking for a future champion that can win at the highest level of the chosen discipline.

Sanlirra stallions include Sanlirra Aladdin’s Light, Vale Park Spotlight (dec) and Sanlirra Revelation (dec). Over the decades the family have introduced new bloodlines from imported mares and stallions specifically from New Zealand.

There is now a focus driven by Elise to breed coloured performance ponies. This year they have had two foals, a pinto out of Sanlirra Lady Bug by Black Charming, and a palomino by Golden Rock.

Matthew and Elise enjoy staying connected to the journey of Sanlirra ponies after they leave their South Australian farm, as can be seen by the gallery of images of successful Sanlirra ponies below.

I purchased Sanlirra Ferrero as a 2yo  and fell in love with Teddy the moment I saw him.He exuded quality, had incredible presence, conformation and had outstanding true movement – the pinnacle of an English riding pony hunter – exactly what I was after. Which he has proved winning Champion Led Hunter Galloway, Best Novice Hunter Galloway and Reserve Champion Hunter Galloway being his first time under an English Judge at the 2020 Canberra Royal Show. In his limited career due to Covid he has also won 2019 Reserve Champion EA National Small Hunter Galloway, Champion Hunter Galloway Canberra Royal 2022 along with Open wins at both Adelaide & Sydney Royals plus numerous HOTY titles.

I met Anne Manley during this trip to Adelaide and became great friends with her. Anne has always been a fabulous friend and confidant. She is so passionate and proud of her progeny – always coming to the local HOTYs and agricultural shows when Sanlirra horses are competing. It has been a lovely journey with Teddy and becoming a part of the Sanlirra Family.

I have known the Sanlirra Stud Principal Anne Manley for many years and admired her breeding of exceptional quality bloodlines to produce many Sanlirra Champions.

Anne & daughter Elise have an impeccable eye for the correct cadence in a show arena champion. Having been involved with many Sanlirra ponies & galloways, I cannot fault the breed.

You can’t be in a hurry to produce a champion and Sanlirra ponies all hold that broad-sash quality. Congratulations Anne and Elise.

What a special place Sanlirra Stud, Anne and Elise hold in my heart. I rode Vale Park Spotlight at Adelaide Royal in the 80s and had so many successful progeny of his. Fast forward today and I have 2 of his sons progeny, Sanlirra Revelation and Sanlirra Notation.

Notation made the show ring in 2021 for Champion Novice Hack and won his open Small Hack class at Brisbane Royal (EKKA) – the icing on the cake was that Anne and Wayne made the trip to watch him.

And we now have Sanlirra Distinction on his way, to mature as a Galloway.

Anne is an honest, hard-working lady who has bred some absolutely fabulous and successful show horses in her time.

I had known of Anne and her highly successful Sanlirra Stud for many years prior to our purchase of Sanlirra Supernatural in 2005. We were on the search for an up-to-height colt with a powerful rear end, intelligent and kind and that is what we got.

‘Scotty’ has been a family member since and I have developed a strong connection with Anne. She is knowledgeable, supportive, welcoming and communicative. I recommend her beautiful horses and look forward to many more years of knowing a true horse breeder.
